Mountain flowers on the Alpe di Siusi

Alpe di Siusi

400 years ago the historian and chronicler Marx Sittich described the “Seysser Almb”, the Alpe di Siusi, as the most beautiful and large highland pasture, as there is no other in the whole country…

The 57 km² of the Alpe di Siusi were born out of an ancient coral reef. It is the largest highland pasture of Europe, lying between 1680 and 2350 metres above sea level. Centuries ago the area was covered by thick woods that were cleared during the middle Ages. Since then, the highland pastures have been regularly mown, but never fertilised. This is how the characteristic dry meadows, which in the 19th century earned the Alpe di Siusi the reputation of being “the most beautiful mountain flower paradise of Europe”.

Starting from mid May the large Alpine pastures turn into suggestive flower carpets: first sprout the delicate crocuses and tall primroses, followed by the yellow and lilac Alpine pasqueflowers, the tender snowbells, the blue gentians, finally the Alpine orchids… until the entire pasture glows in the wonderful colours of Alpine flora. At the end of July, eventually, the breathtaking highlight: the blossoming of the rhododendron!

The Dolomites rise steep and straight over the Alpine pastures: to the North the Sassolungo with the Sella group behind, to the South Mount Sciliar. These belong to the most dramatic and unique mountains of the entire Dolomites. It is impossible not to be fascinated by the contrast of the soft lush meadows below and the wild and barren walls above. The unique beauty of this place will win your heart at first sight!
